Quick Guide To Buying a Gaming Monitor (Refresh Rate , Response Time , Panel Type)
Looking at all these amazing options might have enticed you. But buying a gaming monitor can be a tricky business especially when you’re unaware of all that technical jargon so to understand these terms and specifications we’ve explained some of the key things to know.
Refresh Rates (Go with higher):
Refresh rates measure how often your screen refreshes per second. The higher the refresh rate, the better it is. It’s measured in hertz (hz). The refresh rate of the monitor will determine at what fps you would be able to play your games. It doesn’t matter if your PC can do 120fps if you only have a 60hz monitor because it will only show the game at 60hz. It’s generally a good practice to go with higher refresh rate monitors if your system can support it.
Response Time (Lower is better):
This is measured in Milliseconds (ms) and the lower the number the better. Lower response times means the action you do will be much faster reflected on the game but the difference is generally so minute that only years of gaming can help you make notice difference so it’s better not to make your buying choices based on response times unless you’re a hardcore E sports gamer for whom even a tiny millisecond matters. One more thing to note is many monitors especially on the lower end will promise 1ms response time which is really fast but they do not offer true 1ms response time which is again another reason to not base your buying decision based on response time.
Panel Type:
Monitors come in 3 major LCD technologies and panel types. We will break down each panel type for you:
TN Panels:
TN stands for twisted nematic. They have the fastest response times which is usually 1ms in gaming monitors and are the cheapest one’s so you can find them being used in some of the cheapest gaming monitors out there but they also come at a cost of really poor viewing angles and sometimes washed out colors so I it’s usually not recommended to go with these.
VA Panels:
VA stands for Vertical alignment. They are great when it comes to higher refresh rates but longest in terms of response times. These are slightly more expensive than the TN panels and have better viewing angles than TN but again not as great as IPS but where they really steal the show is the contrast and color depth. VA panels provide the best color contrast and image depths giving you really deep blacks that you can’t get on other display technologies. That’s why even higher end monitors tend to go with VA panels.
IPS Panels:
IPS stands for In Plane Switching. IPS panels really stand out among all the panels when it comes to viewing angles because the picture looks great no matter from where you’re looking at. The best color accuracy and faster response times than VA panels. Where they do not deliver is the refresh rates as IPS panels don’t have the best of refresh rates and are the most expensive panel types among the three but still it’s my recommendation to go with IPS panels.
List of Top Monitors
Here is our list of the best gaming monitors out there for you which ranges from highest to lowest and in every resolution that might suit your needs and also give you the best bang on for your buck.
Best Gaming Monitors in India
1. Acer Predator CG437K
Jack of all and the master of them too. The best a 4K monitor can offer.
Resolution | 4K (3840×1440) |
Screen size | 42.5 inch |
Refresh rate | 120hz (overclock to 144hz) |
Response time | 1ms |
Panel type | VA |
Weight | 18.6kg |
Available At | Amazon |
This is an absolute monster of a 4K display. Complete with all the features that you can ask for and then some but that is a given when you are willing to pay that extra premium price. Its back is absolutely filled with ports so you can hook up your PC, console, external speakers and set top box and set it up as your complete entertainment solution or wall mount it and use it as a TV. Whatever use you want it for this one delivers. And with a high contrast ratio it’s one of the brightest displays out there as well.
It’s only major drawback being its weight and the fact that you can’t really move it in any way. This big boy has no options for swivel or tilt but then again with a screen that big you’re better off just wall mounting it.
2. Acer Nitro XV273K
Elite gaming experience for that doesn’t miss out on anything.
Resolution | 4K (3840×2160) |
Screen size | 27inch |
Refresh rate | 144hz |
Response time | 1ms |
Panel type | IPS/ W LED |
Weight | 13.3kg |
Available At | Amazon |
Acer Nitro looks like it is built for professional e sports gaming. It also delivers 4K gaming at 144hz but falls short on the screen size and HDR. This one comes with HDR 400 unlike the one above that comes with HDR 1000. It also comes with G sync support making it a really appealing choice for all the Nvidia users out there and for even more focused experience comes with detachable blinders and those flashy RGB lights too.
The in built speakers are nothing to write home about but get the job done. One thing to talk about here is that it does come with all the movement capabilities you can ask for like swivel, tilt and height adjustment.

3. ASUS ROG Strix XG32VQ
ASUS packs a punch with this crisp, bright and wonderful cur display and bold design.
Resolution | QHD (2560×1440) |
Screen size | 32inch |
Refresh rate | 144hz |
Response time | 4ms |
Panel type | VA |
Weight | 9.6kg |
Available At | Amazon |
Asus’ Republic of Gamers line stands for true gaming and the design of this monitor shows it perfectly. Not only does it look cool but the VA panel that comes with it provides great picture quality and dynamic range even giving IPS panels a run for its money. The aspect ratio is 16:9 and the display is 1800R curved so for people who want curved displays without going for wider monitors then they should definitely have their eyes on this one.
But for people wanting a VESA mount support should look for other options as this one lacks that option. Specifically for gaming it has a low frame rate compensation technology which doubles your frame rates if it ever reaches below 48fps making sure you don’t experience stutters. This is one of the best offerings from ROG lineup to go for.

4. LG Ultrafine 32UL750
The best 4K console gaming experience that doesn’t dig a hole in your wallet.
Resolution | 4K (3840×2160) |
Screen size | 32inch |
Refresh rate | 60hz |
Response time | 4ms |
Panel type | IPS |
Weight | 7.3kg |
Available At | Amazon |
This one is for all the console gamers out there. This LG monitor is the perfect one for you guys as that large 32 inch screen size coupled with that gorgeous to look at 4K IPS panel would just step up your console gaming experience drastically.
It also has punchy saturated colors that help to pop out every minor detail in the scene. And it also comes with a VESA mount so you can have it mounted on a wall.
But the best part about this monitor is the price. Even though it is 4K and 32 inch, it doesn’t really cost that much but you do end up suffering on response time and refresh rates but on consoles you won’t be able to take advantage of those higher refresh rates so it makes sense to go with a 60hz panel.

5. Acer Predator XB27IHU
Everything you need for professional gaming packed in a single monitor.

Acer Predator XB27IHU is a respectable monitor. It doesn’t have any flashing features, it just does what it needs to and does it quite well. As it is a gaming monitor it has red accents but still sticks to a minimal and simplistic design with an outstanding input lag and refresh rate that can be overclock to 165hz. The QHD panel provides ample brightness but lacks when it comes to low native contrast ratio.
It has all the adjustment options so you can set it up as you please and the IPS panel makes sure that the image retains its quality no matter what angle you see it from. It also has 2 watt dual speakers but they are just okay, I would say go with external speakers and an interesting trivia for people who follow youtube celebrities. Famous youtuber Carryminati also used this monitor.
6. BENQ EX2780Q
Superb color accuracy and amazing in built speakers makes it a media powerhouse.
Resolution | QHD (2560×1440) |

This monitor is a gaming monitor at heart but it’s variety of feature list make it a media powerhouse. And if you think I’m exaggerating then the fact that it comes with a remote control just nails that fact. The 2 watt speakers combined with a 5 watt subwoofer deliver crystal clear sound enough to liven up a medium sized party. It also comes BenQ’s own HDRi which uses hardware and software manipulation to deliver an intelligent HDR system without over saturating the image.
That said it’s no slouch when it comes to gaming as the high refresh rate and great color accuracy makes it a really great option for your gaming setup.

It also comes with multiple game mode profiles to choose from so you get better and smoother transitions and finer shades in different types of games.
It also has HDR 400 support so you get better luminance and color accuracy and 2 watt speakers as well which is a welcome added bonus. And it does get quite bright with 400 nits but doesn’t get as dark so wouldn’t recommend for darker rooms and black uniformity isn’t that good either but still a great option.

Casual gamers best option. 4K and HDR that gives vibrant colors with a true 1ms response time.

Panel type | TN |
Weight | 5.7kg |
Available At | Amazon |
This Benq monitor aims at breaking the price constraints of your 4K displays while also providing a true 1ms response time and HDR support. The TN panel really shows it’s advantages here with that 1ms response time but it’s disadvantages are also present like poor viewing angles. The HDR provided paired up with the B.I. + technology does a lot to counter that so even though you’re not getting the best of viewing angles, you are getting a visually appealing picture quality for a considerably lower price range.

ASUS provided this one with many modes for different types of games and their own Extreme Low Motion Blur (ELMB) technology that helps you see details even when the object is in motion. The TN panels though do an incredible job here but the viewing angles are not that great which is a shortcoming of the TN panels.

Available At | Amazon |
For gamers out there who want a taste of 4K gaming but don’t want to go all out spending on expensive displays this might be a great choice for you. It provides nice color clarity but falls short in refresh rate and response time which is a price to pay when you’re going for a 4K monitor at this price range.
It does come with a flicker free technology and VESA mount support so you can wall mount it but because of its size I wouldn’t recommend doing so and it also boasts Freesync technology so that’s another plus. If 4K isn’t really what you want then I would recommend skipping on this one or else it’s a nice choice.

Things To Consider While Buying Gaming Monitor (Resolution , Screen Size , Console Playing )
Resolution: Monitors come in different resolutions just like TV’s but unlike TV the content your monitor can output is based on what your machine can output. Monitors have 3 major resolutions these days that are:
Full HD 1920 x 1080p
QHD or Quad HD 2560 x 1440p
4K Ultra HD or UHD 3840 x 2160p
4K monitors will give you the best resolution among the 3 and your games will look the best they can on 4K monitors but you should not go for the highest end unless your PC or console can support that resolution. Consoles and high end PCs can do 4K gaming but they do take a hit in performance so unless you have the latest consoles like PS5 or XBOX series X or a powerful PC I don’t recommend going with 4K monitors.
1440p monitors are the sweet spot for PC gamers as most decent PC’s these days can output games at 1440p. This resolution is a nice balance between resolution and performance since the picture quality will still be great at 1440p but it won’t take up that much performance.
1080p is still preferred by a lot of gamers since 1080p monitors are not only cheap but are supported by a wide range of consoles and PC’s and can help your system deliver the best performance it can offer.
Screen Size:
Screen size is also a major aspect to consider before buying a monitor because of 2 important reasons. The first one being that do you have the desk space for larger screen size? You don’t want to end up buying a large 32 inch monitor and don’t even have space for it on your desk. The second reason is that resolution and screen size go hand in hand with each other. 1080p monitors on really large screen sizes like even 27 inch won’t look that crisp so take that into consideration and if you are planning on getting a bigger screen size then opt for higher resolution as well.
PC or Console:
No we’re not going to talk about which is better we’re going to just discuss what kind of monitor to consider if you’re a PC player or console player. Whatever your system preference might be you have to understand that PC provides you with a lot of manual controls over what resolution and fps your game can be played upon which makes all resolution viable for a PC player.
As for console players the resolution and fps is extremely limited. Up until now there was no point of buying a monitor with more than 60hz refresh rate because they only supported that but with the arrival of next gen consoles like PS5 and XBOX series X you can play some games at 120fps so buying a 144hz monitor for consoles is a viable decision if you’re buying the new one’s. I wouldn’t recommend 1440p monitors for console gamers. That is because that resolution is not supported by consoles be it next gen or current gen so even if you bought a 1440p monitor you console will play those games at 1080p. Moreover you don’t have any control over which game can play at what fps so unless you are planning to buy a next gen console, it’s better to stick with a 60hz display.

Additional features ( VESA ,HDR ,G Sync ,Curved , Adjustability)
VESA mount:
VESA is a universal standard for wall mounting support system so if you are planning to mount your monitor on the wall or might be planning a multi monitor setup or your current stand isn’t just doing it and you want to go for a third party stand then you should consider buying a monitor with VESA mount support.
HDR:
HDR or High Dynamic Range is a buzzword you might have heard a lot these days. Without really going in depth of what it is let me tell you what it means for your monitor. HDR will provide a sharper and a more vibrant image making the dark areas darkers and bright areas brighter so your games look so much more crisp and cinematic and your movie watching experience really stands out of the park. A lot of mid to high end monitors support HDR and different technologies of HDR.
G sync and Free sync:
These are screen smoothing technologies which screen tearing or stuttering and reduce input lag as well as enhance on HDR experience. G sync is for people having Nvidia graphics cards and Free sync is for people with AMD graphics cards. Free sync is available in almost every gaming monitor from the lowest end to the highest, G sync comes at a cost and that cost can get really high. If you really want to go for the premium gaming experience then buy a monitor with G sync ultimate or Free sync premium pro.
Curved Displays:
The curve is supposed to give you a better field of view and increase the immersion of your gaming experience but it can also result in glaring problems sometimes. And buying a curved monitor won’t instantly make you feel like you’re in the game. The curves are very slight so they just help you get a better view of the corners, nothing else which of course might be a helpful thing for some but it’s a gimmick if you ask me and you shouldn’t spend more just to get a curve on the monitor.. Monitors with 1800R give you the highest curve possible which goes as low as 1000R.
Adjustability:
Essentially what movement capabilities are referring to movement options for your display like swivel, rotation, tilt adjust and height adjustment. They can be quite useful and handy for certain setups like if you’re building a multi monitor setup but you want one display to be horizontal and another to be vertical so these things help a lot or even minor things like adjusting tilt and height so you can get a comfortable view of your screen. It is a good thing if a monitor offers these capabilities.
We finally concluded our article and hopefully we did help you out buying the perfect monitor for your setup and helped you understand what to look out for when in the market for a monitor.
